Durant on injury: 'By the grace of God, it wasn't as bad as we thought'

Kevin Durant spoke to media Wednesday for the first time since he sprained his left MCL, entering Oracle Arena media room on double-crutches.

In detailing the moments after the injury against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 28, he echoed something Warriors general manager Bob Myers said last week - that there was a brief period when the team thought Durant's season was over.

"It was a pain I never felt before," Durant told reporters including Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News. "It was tough news first. But then it came back and by the grace of God it wasn't as bad as we thought."

As it stands now, Durant is expected to be out for approximately a month, Dubs coach Steve Kerr said earlier Wednesday. It remains to be seen if the eight-time All-Star will be able to return to get in some reps before the playoffs begin.

"I know that's what everybody wants to know," Durant said. "But whatever my body tells me when I'll be ready to play, that's when I'll be ready to play."

Because his left leg is still in a brace and he's using crutches to walk - as well as being photographed in a wheelchair - Durant isn't on the floor working out. However, he said he's still shooting from a seated position.

"I shot in a chair the other day, I gotta keep this jumper right," he said. "But as far as my routine every day, just trying to strengthen ... the muscles around my lower body. Just trying to get that range of motion back in my leg."

In spite of it all, Durant knows things could have been much worse.

"It could be a lot worse," he said. "I got a boo-boo playing basketball. It is what it is."
