Report: Jeanie Buss blocks brothers' attempt to take over Lakers

Jeanie Buss has blocked an attempt from her brothers, Jim and Johnny, to dethrone her as the Los Angeles Lakers president and controlling owner, Nathan Fenno and Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times report.

Jeanie's attorneys reportedly requested a temporary restraining order on Friday to prohibit Jim and Johnny from holding a meeting to elect a new board of directors that didn't include Jeanie. The brothers withdrew the request after Jeanie sought the restraining order.

"An injunction is necessary to prevent irreparable injury to the Lakers," the court filing said. "A new controlling owner would have the power to make changes that could cause serious and irreversible damage to the Lakers basketball team and to the brand, particularly at this key juncture when Petitioner has taken significant steps to attempt to reverse the harm done by Jim."

The family trust can elect three of the five board members, but mandates that co-trustees Johnny and Jim do everything in their power to ensure Jeanie remains controlling owner. Jeanie needs to be on the board to retain her controlling ownership, so the brothers' attempt to replace her as a director breached their fiduciary duty as trustees.

"This is no doubt the beginning and not the end of the game-playing," Jeanie's attorney Adam Streisand told The LA Times. "They don’t have a legal leg to stand on. This is a legal strategy doomed for failure."

This comes just two weeks after Jim was relieved of his duties as vice president of basketball operations following the hiring of Magic Johnson as team president.

"Everything she’s trying to do could be undone," Streisand said.

A probate court trial has reportedly been set for May.
