Magic Johnson lobbies for Kobe to join Lakers' front office
The two greatest guards in Los Angeles Lakers history may play significant roles in the team's front office.
Magic Johnson, who was hired by the Lakers as an advisor on Feb. 2, said that if his role expands, he'd immediately call Kobe Bryant, who retired after the 2015-16 season, about a potential management position.
"First call I make if I'm in charge? Kobe Bryant," Johnson said on ESPN's "First Take." "Because Kobe understands winning. He understands, also, these players. I would call: 'What role you want? ... If you've got a day, just give me that day.'
"I'll take that. Whatever time he has, I want him to come and be a part of it."
Johnson reports to Lakers president/co-owner Jeanie Buss, and would need her approval to hire Bryant. The Hall of Famer was expected to meet with GM Mitch Kupchak to discuss strategy ahead of the All-Star Game.
"Everybody has to be on the same page right now," Johnson told ESPN on Monday. "What we should be concerned about is not just right now, but how it will affect the future of the Lakers. That's why we all have to be on the same page."
Bryant hasn't spoke about joining the Lakers' front office, but fans would certainly be pleased to have him take a job with the team.
