Former NBA point guard Pablo Prigioni announced his retirement on Monday at the age of 39.

"I never dreamed of the day where I had to announce that I'm leaving basketball," Prigioni said in a Twitter statement, as translated by theScore's Carlo Campo. "It's because of that I don't know the best way of doing it. Perhaps those who retire by winning a championship leave happy. Perhaps I never imagined it because it would be such a sad moment."

Prigioni spent time with the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Clippers during his four-year NBA career, averaging 3.5 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.9 rebounds on 42.5 percent shooting.

"The truth is that inside of me I felt the day I had clear signs from my body and head which would indicate the moment had arrive to leave, I would pay attention to those signs and make the decision without doubting it. I had always done so during my career. When I've made a decision, I've always been 100 percent convinced."

Prigioni was a key component of Argentina's national team, leading his country to a bronze medal during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

"My head and my body are completely in agreement that this is the moment. I'm retiring from professional basketball. As the saying goes in a song from Argentina, "Everything concludes at the end, everything has a final, everything finishes."
