Report: Cavs fear broken thumb for J.R. Smith

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

A miserable season for J.R. Smith has hit another low.

Smith did not return to Tuesday's overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks after sustaining a thumb injury in the first half.

X-rays on his hand were inclusive, but sources told ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Dave McMenamin that the team fears a broken thumb to be the diagnosis for Smith, who'll be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

The journeyman shooting guard has fallen on hard times following a redemption campaign in which Smith served as a pivotal role player in the Cavaliers' championship. He's averaging 8.8 points per night while shooting a dreadful 33.7 percent from the field.
