Jazz's Joe Johnson: Role still undefined

Jazz coach Quin Snyder said Monday that he has yet to decide whether Johnson will start or come off the bench, Jody Genessy of Deseret News reports.

Analysis:

Johnson joined the Jazz on a two-year deal this offseason, adding even more depth to what was already one of the deepest rosters in the league. The Jazz are particularly stacked on the wing, where Johnson will compete with Rodney Hood, Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks and Joe Ingles for minutes. Hayward is a virtual lock to start at small forward, meaning Snyder will have to choose between Johnson, Burks and Hood at shooting guard. While Johnson holds a major edge in terms of experience, Hood is coming off of a breakout 2015-16 campaign, and Burks was off to a strong start before an ankle injury forced him to miss 51 games. It's expected that Hood's status as the incumbent will result in him sticking in the starting five for the long haul, but Snyder could try out multiple lineups through the first few weeks of the season. Regardless of whether he starts or not on a given night, Johnson's minutes won't be drastically affected.
