Report: Proposal would take most replay calls away from on-court ref
The NBA is proposing "significant expansion" of the centralized Replay Center's responsibilities and use, giving the replay referee much more authority, according to Bleacher Report's Howard Beck.
In an effort to reduce time spent reviewing plays, the Replay Center referee would make the call on everything but flagrant fouls and other altercations, reports Beck. Such a change would give far more power to the Replay Center, with the game crew only making about 13 percent of in-game calls on replays.
The league's been concerned about the time game referees spend reviewing video on the sideline and its contribution to slowing down close games. Members of the board of governors will vote on the measure next month, but passage seems likely, according to Beck.
The NBA started the Replay Center before the 2014-15 season. Based in its office in Secaucus, N.J., the idea was to centralize all review of real-time plays while the game crew continued to make calls.
