Pelicans GM: No timetable for Holiday to play

The New Orleans Pelicans will begin the 2016-17 season without their starting point guard, and they're uncertain when or if they'll have him back.

Jrue Holiday took a leave of absence after his pregnant wife Lauren - a former member of the U.S. women's soccer team - was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor early this month.

At Pelicans media day on Friday, it was revealed that Lauren gave birth to a healthy baby girl, and general manager Dell Demps told reporters there is no timetable for Holiday's return, but said the team will welcome him back with "open arms" whenever he's ready.

Doctors deemed Lauren's tumor operable, but because of potential complications with her pregnancy, they won't be able to remove it until after the baby is delivered.

"My family comes before basketball," Holiday said after announcing his indefinite leave. "I'm obviously blessed to play this game and be in the position I am in, but my wife is the most important thing in the world to me. She comes before anything else."

In 65 games last season, Holiday averaged 16.8 points, six assists, and 1.4 steals, with a career-best 19.7 PER. The Pelicans were 8.1 points per 100 possessions better with him on the floor.
