Durant: I never promised Westbrook I was re-signing with Thunder

While ESPN's Royce Young recently retracted his comments from the Truehoop podcast saying how Kevin Durant had told Russell Westbrook he was staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the four-time scoring champion has come forth to put the story to rest once and for all, straight from the horse's mouth.

"I didn't say that - words about me telling Russell or Nick (Collison) that I would stay or leave never came out of my mouth," Durant told The Vertical's Shams Charania. "We met as teammates, but no promises came out of it. In this day and age, I can't control anything people claim out there. Someone can go out and say something random right now, and people will believe it."

Durant was referring to a dinner he reportedly had in Los Angeles with his now ex-teammates prior to his trip to the Hamptons to meet with teams for meetings concerning his unrestricted free agency.

"There were never promises given in a meeting before July," Durant said. "I went through the process."

The Thunder, along with the 73-win Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, and San Antonio Spurs were all able to sit down with the former league MVP, with the Warriors eventually locking him in to a two-year deal worth $54.3 million.

Durant is currently getting reps in with his new Warrior teammates Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on the U.S. men's Olympic squad heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month.

"Being able to represent the U.S., I know how much it means," Durant said. "To represent your country, we have people who do it different ways. For us players, this is our way to show how much we appreciate our country and what it means to grow up on American soil. We’re a part of representing the U.S. on a global level."
