Grizzlies' Marc Gasol: Opts out of Summer Olympics

Gasol (foot) won't suit up for Spain in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Spanish news site ABC reports.

Analysis:

Despite suffering a broken right foot in February that ended up costing him the rest of his 2015-16 season with the Grizzlies, Gasol was hopeful to be healthy in time to suit up for his home country in Rio. The Grizzlies had outlined a 16-week recovery timetable for Gasol following his Feb. 20 surgery, which would have put him on track for full health by early July, but it appears he's still struggling to regain conditioning. In an effort to avoid aggravating the injury, Gasol will hold himself out of the Games and turn his attention toward getting ready for training camp in the fall with the Grizzlies. The organization is hopeful that Gasol will be back to full strength by the time camp begins.
