The Utah Jazz announced they traded point guard Trey Burke to the Washington Wizards.

Utah will receive a second-round pick from Washington in return. It is a 2021 selection, according to NBA TV's David Aldridge.

Burke fell out of favor in Utah, where he failed to produce in head coach Quin Snyder's system. The No. 9 pick in the 2013 draft was a starter as a rookie, but once Snyder took over, Burke was relegated to the bench.

The 23-year-old profiles as a scorer, but he's proven to be an inefficient shooter. He's only hit 32.9 percent of his 3-point tries and has difficulty finishing at the basket given his 6-foot-1 frame. His lack of size also renders him a liability on defense.

Nevertheless, Burke's move to the Wizards represents a chance at redemption for him to make good on his potential. If so, the Wizards could have themselves a nice backup point guard on a bargain salary of only $3.4 million.

Burke averaged 10.6 points and 2.3 assists in 21.3 minutes per game last season.

As for Utah, Burke's exit was inevitable. The team traded for George Hill this summer, while Dante Exum is slated to return following an ACL tear, so there was no need for another point guard. Raul Neto, who started ahead of Burke, can also run the point.

The transaction was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
