Bonner hopes to play another season with Spurs

The Red Rocket isn't hoping to take off anytime soon.

36-year-old forward Matt Bonner wants to play at least one more season and he's hoping to stay put alongside Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs.

“I am going to try to play another year, hopefully, with the Spurs,” Bonner told Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express News. “We’ll see what happens.”

Bonner has become an unlikely mainstay in San Antonio since joining the team in 2006. He's just one of six players to have played 10 seasons with the Spurs. The other five are all current or future Hall-of-Famers: George Gervin (11), Manu Ginobili (14), David Robinson (14), Tony Parker (15), and Tim Duncan (19).

The dynasty, however, might soon come to an end. Bonner was the Spurs' 15th man this season and played the fewest minutes of his career with just 206 across 30 appearances.

If this is the end of Bonner's playing career, the Red Mamba will consider himself quite fortunate. Having entered the league as a fringe second-round pick 12 years ago, there was no guarantee that he would play over a decade, let alone win two titles along the way.

"All of it has been positive and amazing," Bonner said. "It’s an awesome organization, a great city to live in, with great fans. … I consider myself one of the luckiest players ever to play in the NBA. To be a role player, a bench guy and be able to stay on the same team for 10 years, I consider myself very fortunate."
