The Memphis Grizzlies' star-crossed dalliance with center Ryan Hollins has taken another unfortunate twist.

The Grizzlies signed point guard Xavier Munford - whose second 10-day contract expired Wednesday - for the remainder of the season, according to team broadcaster Chris Vernon. To make room for Munford, they waived Hollins for the fourth time in six months.

The 7-foot journeyman was with the Grizzlies for training camp, was waived before the start of the regular season, signed with the Washington Wizards in late November, was waived less than a month later, signed with the Grizzlies again at the end of December, was waived just over a week later, inked a 10-day contract with Memphis two weeks after that, then got a second 10-day when the first expired. Once the second deal was up, the Grizzlies had to decide whether to sign Hollins for the remainder of the season or release him. They released him.

On March 2, amid a cavalcade of injuries, they signed Hollins to a contract that ran through the end of the season. Alas, he didn't make it. With the Grizzlies' backcourt needs now outweighing those in the frontcourt, Munford got the nod.

In 32 games across his four stints with Memphis this season, Hollins averaged 3.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.9 minutes. Munford, meanwhile, has been a productive contributor during his two 10-day runs (his first taste of NBA action), averaging 5.6 points and 1.9 rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range in 10 games.

The Grizzlies' magic number to clinch a playoff spot entering play Wednesday night was two.
