Fight Night Flashback: Benson Henderson and Jorge Masvidal

Fight Night Flashback punches the DeLorean to 88 mph to showcase the past bouts of fighters on upcoming UFC cards. This week, we look back at Benson Henderson and Jorge Masvidal, welterweights scheduled to battle at UFC Fight Night 79 on Nov. 28 in South Korea.

Benson Henderson

It was the year 2008.

The price of petroleum climbed to $100 a barrel for the first time in history, Fidel Castro resigned his post as the president of Cuba after 35 years with the title, Michael Phelps and his terrifying wingspan ruled the summer Olympics, and a 24-year-old Henderson was in the midst of an impressive winning streak that would land him in the blue cage of the WEC in less than a year.

After dispatching Ricardo Tirloni with a second-round guillotine choke, Henderson embarked on one of the greatest lightweight careers in MMA history, claiming the UFC title at UFC 144 and successfully defending the championship three times before losing it to WEC nemesis Anthony Pettis at UFC 164.

Jorge Masvidal

Battle-hardened after engaging in a pair of backyard brawls with Kimbo Slice protege Ray, Masvidal was already a five-year veteran of the sport when he stepped into the ring with Yves Edwards in 2007.

Once considered the best lightweight in the world during a time when 155ers were essentially persona non grata in the UFC, Edwards signaled a massive step up in competition for "Gamebred."

Following his highlight-reel head-kick knockout of Edwards, Masvidal has pieced together one of the most underrated careers in lightweight history, counting Tim Means, Michael Chiesa, and Joe Lauzon among his 29 scalps.
