The president of CONMEBOL has cast doubt on the prospect of the United States hosting the 2016 Copa America.

Juan Angel Napout was careful not to confirm Wednesday that the 100th edition of the tournament will be held in the U.S., although officials from the South American governing body and CONCACAF confirmed the United States as host in May.

"The 100th anniversary will have a celebration and this will be on the field. We want to have a Copa Centenario, it's on the FIFA calendar and the idea is for it to be played. Whether it will be in the United States? We have to wait for some things to happen, review some things," Napout told a Paraguayan radio station Wednesday, according to ESPNFC.

FIFA's bribery and corruption scandal appears to have played a role in jeopardizing the Untied States' chances of hosting the competition. The U.S. Department of Justice's indictment revealed that $100 million in bribes were were connected to securing the tournament's rights.
