New York Red Bulls name Jesse Marsch new head coach

The old guy has only been gone for a couple of hours, and the new guy is already sitting in his chair.

The New York Red Bulls announced the hiring of new head coach Jesse Marsch on Wednesday, just hours after confirming the firing of Mike Petke.

“On behalf of the New York Red Bulls, I’d like to welcome Jesse aboard as our new head coach,” said sporting director Ali Curtis, who has come under criticism from all angles in the immediate aftermath of today's moves. "We’re excited to bring someone on who has both MLS and US Men’s National Team coaching experience and we strongly believe he is the right candidate to lead our team going forward.”

Marsch's most recent head coaching position came during the 2012 season, when the Racine, Wis., native was at the helm of the Montreal Impact.

Amid all the criticism for the firing of Petke, the appointment of Marsch is being hailed as an impressive move - despite the obvious difficulties he'll have winning over a fanbase enamored with their last coach.
