Toronto FC-Galaxy Preview

In his final season, Landon Donovan is on the verge of claiming another major MLS record.

The star midfielder can become the league's all-time assist leader Saturday night when the playoff-bound Los Angeles Galaxy try to continue their home success in a matchup with Toronto FC.

Already the MLS leader with 144 career goals, the 32-year-old Donovan recorded two assists in Sunday's 4-0 rout of New York to tie Steve Ralston for the all-time lead with 135.

"Rarely do you see a player with the combination of being able to score goals and create goals," Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said. "Those qualities are excellent. He used to be, I thought, purely a goal scorer. He's a much better creator now."

Donovan, meanwhile, is quick to send praise to those who have helped aid his unselfishness.

"I've had a lot of guys score a lot of goals on my behalf so it's a credit to all of them too," said Donovan, who has six goals and 10 assists in his last eight matches.

"More often than not, when I've made the right decision, guys have gotten in good spots and scored," he added. "So that's something that I'm proud of. I've always wanted to be that type of player. I didn't want to be one dimensional, I wanted to have all sorts of different parts to my game and I hope that showed."

Donovan continued to help Robbie Keane build a strong case for MLS MVP after assisting on the first of the Irishman's two goals against the Red Bulls.

"I always tell him to keep going," said Keane, who has scored 12 of his team-leading 17 goals at home. "To have the most goals and the most assists, it's an incredible achievement for anybody."

Having already clinched a playoff spot and tied with Seattle for first place in the Western Conference, the Galaxy (16-5-9) are riding a 7-0-2 stretch. This is the first of two remaining home games for Los Angeles, which has gone 11-0-3 at home since opening with a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on March 8.

"For us, it's about continuing to get points," Donovan said. "We relish the chance to play in these games. We don't want to win, we want to win well."

The Galaxy only have one win in their last six matches against Toronto (11-11-7), but have earned at least one point in the last eight meetings, going 3-0-5 since losing 2-0 at TFC on May 31, 2008.

Just outside of playoff position in the East, Toronto is 1-3-2 all-time at Los Angeles, where it's aware that in order to improve on that mark it must contain Donovan.

"We understand part of us going there and getting a result is going to be making the game very difficult for him," Donovan's former U.S. national teammate and Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley told the team's official website.

"It's important for us to give away as little as possible."

Though Toronto is in the midst of an 0-2-1 road stretch, it looks for a third straight victory overall after scoring three goals each in its last two at home. Nick Hagglund scored his first two career goals and Bradley added the other in last Saturday's 3-2 victory over Portland.
