MLS Power Rankings, Week 1: Where do Atlanta, Minnesota sit after debuts?

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the 2017 MLS Power Rankings, where we rank each team after each week with consideration to form, latest results, stats, and some other intangibles to try and craft an idea of how things stand in one single table.

Here's how each team ranks after the first week of action in 2017:

1. FC Dallas

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. LA Galaxy
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Sporting KC (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 2 1

FC Dallas kicked off 2017 in as strong a fashion as the club enjoyed in 2016, making short work of the Galaxy to keep the top spot in our Power Rankings.

2. New York Red Bulls

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Atlanta United
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Colorado (4:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 2 1

The New York Red Bulls looked a little overwhelmed in the first half against Atlanta but turned it around late, all without Dax McCarty leading the pack.

3. Portland Timbers

  • Last Week: 5-1 win vs. Minnesota United
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 at LA Galaxy (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 5 1

Sebastian Blanco and Diego Valeri will form quite a fearsome duo in MLS, and that's not to mention David Guzman who dominated in midfield, too.

4. Toronto FC

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Real Salt Lake
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Philadelphia (4:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

Heading to Rio Tinto Stadium in altitude while still getting back to full fitness is no easy test, but Toronto FC managed to survive the day relatively unscathed.

5. Seattle Sounders

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Houston Dynamo
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Montreal (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 1 2

The MLS Cup champions succumbed to defeat at the hands of 2016's last-placed Houston, but Clint Dempsey scoring is cause for tremendous optimism.

6. Colorado Rapids

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. New England Revolution
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Red Bulls (4:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 1 0

Back to the norm for the Colorado Rapids, who once again dispatched their opposition by a slim 1-0 scoreline at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

7. LA Galaxy

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. FC Dallas
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 vs. Portland (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 1 2

We're willing to look past a loss to Dallas, which is about what any team can expect nowadays; Romain Alessandrini and Giovani Dos Santos look good.

8. Houston Dynamo

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Seattle Sounders
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Columbus (8:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 2 1

Well then - who saw this one coming? The Houston Dynamo defeated Seattle, Erick Torres scored his first goal since 2014 and suddenly, there is hope again.

9. San Jose Earthquakes

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Montreal Impact
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Vancouver (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 1 0

San Jose pummeled Montreal with shots at times but only scored the one; still, that's good enough for the Earthquakes, for now.

10. Orlando City

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. New York City FC
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at New England (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-0 1 0

Welcome home. Orlando City put in a commendable effort against NYCFC, and did so without captain Kaka, who picked up an early injury.

11. Real Salt Lake

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Toronto FC
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Chicago (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

Held off a Toronto FC side in full synchronicity and even came close to scoring a game-winner, but for Real Salt Lake, a point against the Reds is just fine.

12. Atlanta United

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. New York Red Bulls
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 at Minnesota (5:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 1 2

Forgive us if we rate this team a little high, but Atlanta United left us thoroughly impressed. Expansion sides always have their struggles but there's talent here.

13. New York City FC

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Orlando City
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 vs. D.C. United (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 0 1

It seems Patrick Vieira still has some work to do to get his New York City FC team firing on all cylinders. Chemistry will be the key issue to work on.

14. Sporting Kansas City

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. D.C. United
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Dallas (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

Among the 0-0 draw contingent from Week 1, Sporting Kansas City gets the 14-spot nod because of Gerso Fernandes, who was quite excellent in his debut.

15. Vancouver Whitecaps

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Philadelphia Union
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at San Jose (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

Fredy Montero is back, but he was made to wait for his first goal. Still, the Vancouver Whitecaps will be pleased with their collective effort.

16. D.C. United

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Sporting Kansas City
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 at NYCFC (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

In a league full of big-name players and new Latin attacking talent, D.C. United will need more than just Luciano Acosta to survive.

17. Montreal Impact

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. San Jose Earthquakes
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Seattle (7:00 p.m. ET)

The Montreal Impact are probably a little low, but failed to muster even a single shot on target against San Jose. They'll be back near the top soon enough.

Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 0 1

18. Philadelphia Union

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Toronto (4:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 0 0

The Philadelphia Union sit 17th through no fault of their own, and we imagine they'll bounce past quite a few other teams in the coming weeks.

19. New England Revolution

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Colorado Rapids
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. Orlando (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 0 1

Shape, formation, and player choices are still being worked out for the New England Revolution, and unfortunately, Kei Kamara doesn't really fit anywhere.

20. Chicago Fire

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Columbus Crew SC
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 vs. RSL (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 1 1

This Chicago Fire team promises to be stronger than the team of 2015 and 2016 and while the signs are there, a win to start would have gone a long way.

21. Columbus Crew

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Chicago Fire
  • Next MLS Match: March 11 at Houston (8:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-0-1 1 1

We'll see with the Columbus Crew this season. The Eastern Conference has become a real battleground. Patience is needed.

22. Minnesota United

  • Last Week: 5-1 loss vs. Portland Timbers
  • Next MLS Match: March 12 vs. Atlanta (5:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-0 1 5

Ouch. This was not the entrance Minnesota United wanted to make but probably one that many people saw coming. Much more work is needed here.
