U.S. men's national team captain Michael Bradley says he is "sad and embarrassed" after U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order barring people from seven predominantly-Muslim nations from receiving visas for a period of 90 days.

The Toronto FC midfielder took to his Instagram account to clarify his stance and add to a statement he had earlier given to Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl after being asked an impromptu - and "very fair" - question regarding the decision.

Bradley's original comments regarding the ban, below:

"We live in totally unique times, given everything that has gone on in the presidential election and what that has meant for our country," Bradley originally told Wahl.

"Things have gone on across the world. Emotions run high. And I get this idea that there are people who think for the time being we as a country need to think about ourselves and the security of our country first and foremost.

"As a father of two young children, I can understand that. But ultimately, I truly believe the United States is a country that has always been about welcoming people from all over the world and giving them an opportunity for a better life, an opportunity they otherwise wouldn't have. I think that is a big part of what us who we are.

"People love to throw out this phrase: We live in the greatest country in the world. And I believe that historically the way we have handled ourselves opening our arms to people from all across the world, that plays a big part in this idea that we live in the greatest country in the world.

"Look, there are no easy answers. I understand that. And one of the biggest problems we have at the moment is there are so few people who are able to look at things in any other way than what is good for them. When you look at politics and everything that goes on, I think that part is not only disappointing, but it's dangerous.

"As a proud American, I hope we can find the right way to move forward in all this and make sure that we're safe but also not lose so many of the things that make the country so great."
