Villa wants to extend NYCFC contract beyond 2017
David Villa wants to continue bulging the back of the net for several more years with New York City FC.
The Spanish striker, in an interview with Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated, says he has already begun talks with NYCFC brass over extending his contract with the club. His current deal runs through the 2017 season, at which point he'll be 36 years old.
"If my mentality, if my body, of course, are good, (then) we still here," he said. "I am comfortable here, the club I think is comfortable with me, and if I am good, I keep playing here. We're talking about it with the club."
Villa, Spain's all-time leading scorer, has been a dominant force since moving to Major League Soccer two years ago, scoring 40 goals.
He sits second in MLS scoring this season, his 22 tallies just one adrift of league-leader Bradley Wright-Phillips as the race for the MLS Golden Boot heads into the final weekend of the campaign.
Villa will be hoping that he can reel in his Red Bulls counterpart Sunday when NYCFC looks to clinch a top-two seed in the Eastern Conference - and a bye through the opening playoff round that comes with it - with a victory over the Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium.
