Ranking every MLS All-Star Game jersey in the modern era

Reuters

The MLS All-Star Game is an annual spectacle where footballers from across the league don a single shirt to take on one of Europe's finest teams (and, one time, Fulham).

And, each year, that single shirt has been put up for sale for fans to purchase, though we're not sure exactly why ...

In any case, this ranking pits these not-so-fabled jerseys against one another, while ignoring the All-Star Game jerseys worn between 1996 and 2004, since the format saw an Eastern and Western Conference team face off against one another.

Here's how we rank 'em:

12. Colorado 2007

It was a simpler time in 2007; a time when jerseys didn't have to accomplish things like looking good or being original. Don't believe us? Let's compare this kit to ...

11. Chicago 2006

... this one, from one year prior. That's right. Rather than come up with an original design, the 2006 and '07 game repeated the same template, woefully.

10. Columbus 2005

Delightfully tacky and with a bold "Sierra Mist" painted on the front, this 2005 shirt looks era appropriate but ... wow. MLS has come a long way.

9. Salt Lake City 2009

The weird-looking navy blue mid-section makes this shirt look just slightly off. We can appreciate the idea, but not the execution.

8. Philadelphia 2012

"Is that a goalkeeper kit?"

No, it's not, but it looks like one.

7. New York 2011

This shirt might have been better received in an era when sharp lines and red-and-black was cool, but it was weird in 2011. Five years on, it's still weird.

6. Colorado 2015

The colors, the sash, using both a maple leaf and a star, and the league's new logo as the badge, it all works, and watching Kaka and David Villa wear them and defeat Tottenham was a treat.

5. Toronto 2008

The shirt itself is okay but this shirt is significant and memorable simply because PepsiCo decided to abandon Sierra Mist and use its flagship soda as the sponsor in 2008. We're in the big leagues now, boys.

4. Portland 2014

Smart, elegant, and tastefully Portland, this shirt hit every single note and perfectly encompasses the shift into the serious side of football MLS is now trying to convey.

3. Houston 2010

Sometimes, a shirt can be so awful it's actually good. This is one of those shirts. The ugly combination of baby blue and orange was punished appropriately in a 5-2 spanking by Manchester United and the shirt was rightfully retired forever.

2. Kansas City 2013

Sporting Kansas City is easily the most fashionable side in MLS so it's fitting that the 2013 All-Star Game jersey ranks high on our list. It's, well ... perfect.

1. San Jose 2016

Clean, modern, great colors, and design are all complemented by the use of the league's new logo as the team badge, making 2016 the best of the bunch.
