The 2016 Amway Canadian Championship will be contended by two MLS rivals as Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps secured their spots in the tournament final with positive results against the Montreal Impact and the Ottawa Fury, respectively.

The Reds won the semi-final series over 401 Derby rivals Montreal with a 0-0 draw at Stade Saputo, maintaining the 4-2 lead secured in a first-leg win at BMO Field. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps battled back from a 2-0 aggregate deficit with three unanswered goals at BC Place to win the home-away series with a 3-2 scoreline.

Toronto FC went into the second leg with a clear mission and Greg Vanney didn't need to take many risks, naming a conservative team in a 4-2-3-1 formation in an effort to frustrate Montreal into making mistakes.

The Impact did just that when Lucas Ontivero picked up a red card on the hour mark, enough to deflate hopes of a two-goal comeback.

As such, the rest of the match turned into a defensive exercise for Vanney's side, who were rarely tested by Didier Drogba and Co., with Toronto FC goalkeeper Clint Irwin facing just three shots on target through 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Whitecaps earned an early penalty and added a second goal in the first half, before securing the result with a second-half goal scored by Octavio Rivero in the 52nd minute of play.

The Whitecaps and Toronto FC next meet on June 22 before wrapping up the competition in the second leg on June 29.
