Edgar Castillo replaces Timmy Chandler in USMNT Copa squad

Monterrey defender Edgar Castillo has been called up to the United States Men's National Team for the Copa America Centenario as a replacement for injured full-back Timmy Chandler.

Castillo, 29, will join his mates for a pre-tournament training camp pending roster change approval ahead the Copa opener against Colombia on June 3.

"Per regulations, an injured player may be replaced on the roster up to 24 hours prior to a team's opening match. The replacement must come from the 40-man preliminary roster submitted April 29 and approved by the tournament medical committee," the statement read.

Tough luck for Chandler, who picked up a right quadriceps strain while playing in a promotion playoff tilt with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. The left-back limped off the pitch during Monday's top-flight securing match with former team FC Nurnberg.

Pegged to become a key member of the U.S. generation of talented German-American footballers, Chandler's progression has been stunted by injuries and a lack of appearances for his club side. Chandler, 26, featured in just 12 league matches this season, five as a starter.

Liga MX veteran Castillo makes his return to Klinsmann's squad as just one of two players to play for both the U.S. and Mexico senior teams. With three appearances for Los Tri, Castillo became eligible for its neighbours to the north after an alteration in FIFA regulations stated that international friendlies would not count towards a player's affiliation.
