White Sox sign veteran shortstop Rollins

The Chicago White Sox addressed their lack of depth at shortstop Monday, agreeing to a minor-league deal with shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Rollins, who can make $2 million if he makes the club, was one of the top free-agent infielders remaining on the market, and comes as a much cheaper alternative to Ian Desmond.

"We envision Jimmy contributing both on and off the field,'' general manager Rick Hahn said.

The 37-year-old struggled last season in his first and only year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, hitting .224/.285/.358 with 12 stolen bases, but still managed to hit 13 home runs.

Rollins generated plenty of interest this winter, and reportedly rejected two teams that offered super-utility roles and guaranteed deals worth more money as he wanted to remain at shortstop, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rollins has appeared in 2,192 games at the position over his 16-year career, seeing time at second base just once.

Chicago had been looking to upgrade at shortstop all winter after declining Alexei Ramirez's $10-million option.

Adding Rollins is likely the final move in what's been a busy offseason for Hahn, who also added Todd Frazier, Brett Lawrie, Alex Avila, Dioner Navarro, and Mat Latos this winter.
