Report: Rockies have been in contact with Desmond

As the Colorado Rockies await word on a possible suspension for shortstop Jose Reyes, general manager Jeff Bridich has reportedly been looking at a contingency plan.

The Rockies have been in contact with the representatives of free-agent infielder Ian Desmond, sources have told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, who adds that any attempt to sign Desmond is dependent on how many games, if any, Reyes is suspended for.

Reyes is slated to stand trial April 4 in Hawaii on domestic abuse charges following an alleged altercation with his wife on Halloween. Commissioner Rob Manfred said last week that he hopes to have a ruling on a possible suspension prior to Opening Day, which falls on April 3.

The 32-year-old Reyes is owed $22 million in each of the next two seasons, but would not be paid during a potential suspension. Should he be suspended for a significant portion of the season, the Rockies could opt to sign Desmond to a one-year deal with the money they would save by not paying Reyes, while also filing the position with the top remaining free-agent position player.

Desmond is linked to draft-pick compensation after declining a qualifying offer from the Washington Nationals in November. The Rockies' fourth overall pick is protected, however, meaning they would be forced to surrender the No. 38 pick should they sign Desmond, according to Rosenthal.

A three-time Silver Slugger award winner, Desmond slashed a disappointing .233/.290/.384 with 19 home runs and 187 strikeouts in 156 games last year. Like many hitters, he's enjoyed much offensive success at Coors Field over his career, hitting .407/.435/.663 with three home runs and 11 doubles in 21 games at the Rockies' stadium.
