Kiermaier to attempt 35-ounce steak for charity

As the majority of big leaguers attempt to get in shape with spring training right around the corner, Kevin Kiermaier finds himself at the dinner table.

The Tampa Bay Rays center fielder and reigning American League Platinum Glove winner will attempt to eat a 35-ounce steak Thursday during a charity event to raise funds for abused, abandoned, and neglected children.

Though he's a willing participant for a good cause, Kiermaier doesn't believe he'll be able to finish the massive side of meat.

"Oh, no, no, no, let's not get this twisted," Kiermaier told Bill Chastain of MLB.com. "There's no way I'm going to be able to finish this steak. I've already accepted that. I'm going to do my best to eat what I can, but there's a zero percent chance of me eating 35 ounces of a steak."

Kiermaier demonstrated his impressive range last season, en route to emerging as one of the best center fielders in baseball. With his goal this winter to further improve his speed, he's not going to try to force the issue when it comes to tackling the steak.

"I'm trying to stay in shape," Kiermaier said. "I want to steal some bases this year. I don't need this little food baby showing in my stomach."
