Mets targeting July 1 return for Wheeler

Zack Wheeler hasn't appeared in a game for the New York Mets since September of 2014 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and with his return scheduled for the team's upcoming campaign, the 25-year-old has high expectations for himself.

"You don't want to come back and be mediocre or below average just because you didn't work hard enough," Wheeler told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "That's why I'm putting in the work ... you want to come back and be great."

The Mets are targeting Jul. 1 as a return date for the right-hander after having his initial 12-month recovery timeline pushed to 15 months thanks to doctor's orders.

Wheeler, whose been throwing from 120 feet, not only underwent the Tommy John surgery, he also had his flexor pronator - which helps stabilize the elbow - repaired.

"I feel nice and strong, arm feels good," Wheeler explained. "I'm happy where I'm at right now."

During his recovery, Wheeler is reportedly testing out a new arm angle that helped teammate Jacob deGrom after his recovery from Tommy John.

The youngster hopes the change will also improve his command and control when he returns.

Wheeler owns a career record of 18-16 with a 3.50 ERA and should help fortify an already strong Mets rotation upon his return.
