Report: Marlins looking to add another veteran starter

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sport

The Miami Marlins bolstered their rotation earlier this month with the signing of Wei-Yin Chen, and general manager Michael Hill is hoping to close out the offseason with a complementary piece.

Hill wants to add another veteran starter and is considering pitchers like Doug Fister and Alfredo Simon, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The Marlins' rotation currently projects to have Jose Fernandez, Chen, Jarred Cosart, and Tom Koehler, with an opening at the back end.

After finishing eighth in National League Cy Young voting in 2014, Fister is coming off the worst season of his career, going 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 103 innings with the Washington Nationals. The 31-year-old right-hander, who was limited with an elbow injury, is reportedly seeking a two-year deal worth around $22 million.

Simon is also coming off a down year. The 34-year-old went 13-12 with the Detroit Tigers, posting a career-worst 5.05 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 31 starts. Over the previous three seasons, Simon went 24-16 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 345 innings with the Cincinnati Reds.
