Predicting landing spots for MLB's best remaining free agents

While the crop of free-agent starters has been picked thin, the position player market remains robust, and there are plenty of needy rosters with less than two months before the start of spring training.

Here are predictions for where the remaining top free agents will land:

Yoenis Cespedes - OF

Cespedes' torrid second half that propelled the New York Mets to the World Series hasn't translated into a bidding war for the slugger's services, but the perennial 20-plus-homer threat has had interest from as many as five teams this winter. The 30-year-old belted a career-high 35 home runs to go with a .870 OPS last season, while also claiming a Gold Glove for his defensive efforts in left field.

Chris Davis - 1B

Davis has crushed 126 home runs over the past three seasons with the Orioles, but the team doesn't appear willing to budge from its $150-million offer. One of the game's best power hitters, Davis has sandwiched a pair of seasons in which he's led the league in homers with one in which he slashed .196/.300/.404. Agent Scott Boras is pushing his client as an everyday corner outfielder, which could expand Davis' market.

Justin Upton - OF

The youngest of the top free-agent sluggers available, Upton is coming off a third straight season with at least 26 homers. The 28-year-old's agent stated Friday that his client is seeking a long-term deal, and Upton's already been linked to the Angels and Orioles. Like Davis and Ian Desmond, Upton is attached to draft-pick compensation after rejecting a one-year qualifying offer.

Ian Desmond - SS

The best middle infielder left on the board, Desmond is coming off a down year in which he hit a career-low .233, while striking out a career-high 187 times. Still, the 30-year-old has hit more homers than any shortstop in the NL over the past four seasons and could offer a veteran presence for plenty of teams looking for help up the middle.

Yovani Gallardo - SP

With the top free-agent pitching options locked up, Gallardo still represents a strong middle-of-the-rotation arm for teams looking to build on their rotation depth. The 29-year-old won 13 games for the Rangers last season, posting a career-low 3.42 ERA, but also managed a career-high 1.42 WHIP. The Astros and Orioles were reportedly aggressively pursuing the right-hander last month.
