Report: Dodgers targeting Cueto, Kazmir as fallback options
The Los Angeles Dodgers are following the lead of the San Francisco Giants, and reaching out to a number of pitchers as back-up plans in case they don't land Zack Greinke.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports the Dodgers are reaching out to Johnny Cueto, Scott Kazmir, and Jeff Samardzija in the event Greinke decides against an L.A. return. He also writes that Hisashi Iwakuma could be high on the list of fallback options as well.
| PITCHER | W-L | IP | ERA | SO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zack Greinke | 19-3 | 222 2/3 | 1.66 | 200 |
| Johnny Cueto | 11-13 | 212 | 3.44 | 176 |
| Scott Kazmir | 7-11 | 183 | 3.10 | 155 |
| Jeff Samardzija | 11-13 | 214 | 4.96 | 163 |
| Hisashi Iwakuma | 9-5 | 129 2/3 | 3.54 | 111 |
Greinke is reportedly deciding between a return to the Dodgers, or a new home with their longtime rivals in the Bay Area; while Los Angeles is mulling over the option of giving him a six-year, $210-million contract offer, nothing has been decided.
It was reported on Thursday that the Giants also have back-up plans, and that their plan B if they lose out on the Greinke sweepstakes consists of Samardzija, and Mike Leake.
If Greinke and the Dodgers go with the $210-million figure, the 32-year-old would best southpaw David Price's annual average value, making him the highest-paid player in baseball history per annum. A return to Los Angeles would also likely make the Dodgers favorite to once again win the NL West, regardless of any additions the Giants could make.
