The Miami Marlins are attempting to get on the same page with the agent of their ace.

The Marlins reached out to Scott Boras in order to discuss an innings plan for right-hander Jose Fernandez, as he continues to build up his arm strength since returning from Tommy John surgery midway through last season.

Both sides were reportedly involved in a three-hour conference call Monday morning, Peter Gammons told MLB Network, where they discussed the best way to use Fernandez in 2016.

Talks surrounding an innings limit reached a point of contention earlier this month when Marlins president David Samson said the team would exclude Boras from any future conversation regarding Fernandez's workload.

''He will not be involved in any discussion as it relates to Jose Fernandez,'' Samson said two weeks ago. ''We will be in touch with the doctors and Jose as we formulate a plan.''

Fernandez, however, said Boras would, in fact, be involved, as the pitcher gets to decide who is involved in those types of discussions.

"I do not know what all this is all about, but Scott Boras will be there because he's my agent, and I get to decide who is going to be on my phone calls on my conference," Fernandez said Friday. "It's that simple."

Samson was not involved in discussions during Monday's conference call, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.

Fernandez threw 64 2/3 innings last season following his return in July, and though a set number has yet to be established, he's likely expected to throw somewhere in the range of 160-180 innings next season.
