Report: Mets interested in outfielders Span, Parra

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

With the potential departure of Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield, the New York Mets could have a glaring hole to fill.

They may be able to address it through the free-agent market, and two outfielders they're showing interest in are Denard Span and Gerardo Parra, according to Matt Ehalt of NorthJersey.com.

The acquisition of either player wouldn't create the same kind of buzz as when New York landed Cespedes at last season's trade deadline, but they're both capable major-league veterans with good track records.

Span spent the past three seasons with the Washington Nationals, providing them with an everyday center fielder and lead-off man. The 31-year-old appeared in only 61 games in 2015 because of injuries to his hip, back, knee, and abdomen.

He hit .301/.365/.431 with five home runs, 22 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 61 games.

Parra, 28, split the year between the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles, posting a .291/.328/.452 hitting line with a career-high 14 home runs. The former Gold Glover could offer the Mets an above-average defensive option in the outfield.
