San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller's name was all over the news in the offseason, but he remained one of the quietest GMs at the trade deadline.

Considering the Padres are eight games back of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers and 7 1/2 games out of a wild-card position, many expected Preller to make moves, especially after his aggressive winter. However, he truly believes his current team has what it takes to make the postseason.

"I feel like we have the pitching and players to make up some ground," Preller told reporters Friday.

The Padres made just one minor move as the deadline arrived, acquiring reliever Marc Rzepczynski from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for outfielder Abraham Almonte.

Preller said he considered both buying and selling at the deadline, although a deal didn't really work out in his team's favor either way.

"Ultimately, we didn't feel like we got the value that we wanted to get to," he told the San Diego Union-Tribune's Dennis Lin.

Preller made a huge splash in the offseason by acquiring Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Craig Kimbrel, James Shields, Wil Myers, and others. However, the moves have yet to pay dividends. Although the Padres reportedly discussed Kimbrel with the New York Yankees, the GM didn't pull the trigger on any game-changing moves.
