The Chicago Cubs bolstered their bullpen moments ahead of Friday's non-waiver trade deadline, acquiring right-hander Tommy Hunter from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder Junior Lake.

An impending free agent, Hunter has spent much of the last five seasons in Baltimore, thriving upon being moved to the bullpen on a full-time basis in 2013. This season, the 29-year-old has crafted a 3.63 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP over 39 appearances, notching 32 strikeouts while allowing just 11 walks and three homers in 44 2/3 innings.

Lake, meanwhile, appeared in 108 games for the Cubs last season before losing his job this summer. Over parts of three seasons in Chicago, the 25-year-old compiled a .241/.283/.380 line with 16 home runs in 193 games.

The Cubs appeared resolved to improve their pitching staff at the deadline, acquiring Dan Haren from Miami before trading for Hunter.
