The New York Yankees have reportedly refused to give up shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo in exchange for closer Craig Kimbrel of the San Diego Padres, making a trade between the teams unlikely.

The Yankees are willing to absorb all $28 million owed to Kimbrel through 2017 despite already having Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller in their bullpen, Jon Heyman of CBSSports reports.

Heyman adds that the Padres are seeking "big young players" in return and the 20-year-old Mateo would appear to fit that bill, batting .344 in 91 games at Single-A Charleston this season.

The Padres originally thought they would be able to move Kimbrel to the Washington Nationals, but those plans halted after the NL East leaders acquired Jonathan Papelbon from the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the week.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros are also known to be interested in the 27-year-old closer who is an almost perfect 29-for-30 in save opportunities this season despite a career-high 2.75 ERA.
