VIDEO: Mets' Syndergaard hammers 1st career homer

Known affectionately as Thor, the oft-depicted god from Norse mythology, New York Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard demonstrated Wednesday afternoon precisely why he's likened to the hammer-wielding diety.

In the fourth inning of his club's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies, the 22-year-old right-hander – who committed to Dallas Baptist University as a position player before being drafted as a pitcher in 2010 – unleashed his mighty hammer, so to speak, launching a solo shot to center field for the first homer of his career.

Before he was promoted by the Mets earlier this month, Syndergaard compiled a robust .270/.357/.405 line with one home run and two doubles across 98 career plate appearances in the minor leagues. His first professional home run, coincidentally, came in his final start for Triple-A Las Vegas back on May 7.

Syndergaard's offensive contributions at Citi Field on Wednesday weren't limited to a fourth-inning solo shot, however, as he also added a pair of singles, finishing 3-for-3 to raise his average to .444 thus far. The last Mets pitcher, by the way, to collect three hits and record a home run in a game was Dwight Gooden, who won the National League Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards before he turned 21.
