(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are back home after their long trip east and will open a three-game series Monday versus the San Diego Padres at Angel Stadium.
The Angels went 5-5 on their trek against the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, and capped the journey with a second straight loss at Fenway Park on Sunday.
In the 6-1 decision against Boston, Hector Santiago allowed three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss and was outdueled by Wade Miley, who tossed eight innings of one-run ball.
"I think they lost the leash," Santiago quipped on why he wasn't pulled earlier.
Mike Trout knocked in a run, while Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun both finished 0-for-4 at the plate.
The Angels hope a 10-game stay in Anaheim will right the ship and they will also entertain the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays at the Big A.
Toeing the rubber in Monday's opener with San Diego will be Jered Weaver, who is 3-4 with a 4.37 earned run average in nine starts and has won his last three outings. Weaver allowed three runs in seven innings of a 4-3 win at Toronto last Wednesday and has given up four runs in the last three starts.
Weaver is 1-1 in three home starts and has won both of his starts against the Padres, toting a 1.13 ERA across 16 innings in this series. San Diego is batting just .143 against the veteran right-hander.
The Padres lost two of three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend, but salvaged the set with James Shields on the mound in Sunday's 11-3 pounding of the NL West rivals.
San Diego spotted Shields and 10-0 lead by the fifth inning and the right- hander pushed his record to 6-0 with seven innings of three-run ball. He struck out seven and walked one batter.
"It might sound funny, but when you get eight runs early, in two innings, it's a little tougher to pitch," Padres manager Bud Black said. "But he kept his concentration and kept his edge. He gave us what we needed, six straight zeroes."
Justin Upton hit a grand slam and finished with six RBI, while Will Venable was 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Padres, who ended a four-game slide and won for the second time in the previous nine games. The Padres pounded out 20 hits.
Tyson Ross pulls pitching duties for San Diego on Monday and he is 2-4 with a 3.93 earned run average through nine starts. Ross is only 1-4 in his last five decisions and was touched for three runs in seven innings of a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.
Ross has given up at least two runs in every start this season and the Padres are 4-5 when he takes the mound. Ross has an 0-2 mark in five road assignments and is 1-1 with a 1.78 ERA in eight meetings (4 starts) with the Angels.
The Padres and Angels are meeting for the first time since 2012, when San Diego took two of three games. The Halos, though, are 9-5 in the previous 14 matchups with the Friars.
