American League Game Summary - Oakland at Tampa Bay

St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - David DeJesus hit a solo homer and an RBI double to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.

Alex Colome (3-1) ended a two-start winless streak after throwing four shutout innings. The right-hander allowed just four hits and a walk as the Rays won for the third time in their last four games.

The A's, who are an MLB-worst 14-29, lost for the 13th time in their last 15 games.

"We just need to relax," A's catcher Stephen Vogt said. "This is a really good team that's going through a really rough patch right now."

Jesse Chavez (1-4) surrendered three runs on five hits and a walk in six-plus innings, falling to 1-4 in six outings since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation.

After putting two runners on in the first inning, the Rays bats were silent until the fourth, when Evan Longoria drew a leadoff walk and scored on DeJesus' two-out double for a 1-0 lead.

Colome escaped a couple of early jams without giving up a run to the A's, who stranded Billy Burns after a leadoff triple in the first inning and then left the bases loaded in the fourth.

He retired the side in order in the fifth and the Rays brought in Steve Geltz, who threw a perfect sixth.

Kevin Jepsen, Jake McGee and Brad Boxberger also threw one scoreless inning each to preserve the shutout. Boxberger stranded runners at the corners in the ninth to earn his 12th save of the season.

Chavez retired seven out of eight batters between DeJesus' double in the fourth and his leadoff homer to right-center in the seventh on a first-pitch cut fastball.

"I'm just getting pitches and not trying to do too much with it," DeJesus said,

Brandon Guyer followed with a single on Chavez's last pitch, stole two bases and then hustled home after reliever Edward Mujica knocked down Bobby Wilson's line drive and threw him out at first.
