Mesoraco (hip) got into a squat position about 15 times and tossed approximately 15 balls at 20 percent on simulated throws to second base Tuesday, MLB.com reports. "At least I know I can get into squat position, which I hadn't done for 30-something days," Mesoraco said. "It's good. Definitely baby steps. We're not going to go crazy because those muscles haven't been used. It's going to be a slow process."

Analysis:

It's an encouraging first step for Mesoraco, who hasn't caught a game since Apr. 12, and the plan is for him to do "more of the same" Wednesday before the Reds head into an off day. Mesoraco has contemplated surgery on the hip if it doesn't get better through treatment and therapy. He's been limited mostly to pinch-hit duty, but has a chance to start as many as five games at DH this week with the Reds playing two road interleague series.
