College Baseball Roundup: WKU topples Louisville; Moss deals
Once a week, theScore brings you the most interesting and important stories of the college baseball season. The College Baseball Roundup is your one-stop shop for everything that happened in the week that was, from top plays to crucial injuries. Here's a look at what went down in the NCAA this past week.
Performance of the Week
Moss spins eight-inning gem
North Carolina rode the arm of senior right-hander Benton Moss as the Tar Heels took down Boston College.
Moss allowed just two hits through eight shutout innings with six strikeouts and improved his record to 6-0 on the year.
He also became the fourth pitcher in school history to reach 300 career punch outs.
Upset of the Week
Western Kentucky takes down No. 4 Louisville
Louisville wasn't ready for the Hilltoppers.
Western Kentucky jumped out early with two first-inning runs and never looked back, taking down third-ranked Louisville 7-3.
WKU's Ryan Church proved to be the catalyst, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored in the winning effort. This marks the team's eighth win over a Top 25 school under head coach Matt Myers.
He was asked after the game what victories over Louisville and Kentucky (who they swept earlier in the week) do for the program. He downplayed it, saying it was another day at the office.
"At the end of the day I don't know if this win is any more valuable than Kentucky, Murray (State) or FIU. They're all a win," he said. "And it just validates that we have a chance to be a very good program when we play baseball the right way."
Story of the Week
Make it 17 straight for Illinois
Illinois is easily the nation's hottest team, sweeping Penn State over the weekend for its 17th consecutive win.
There's no stopping the Fighting Illini, as the team prolonged the best start in school history to 36-6-1 while remaining comfortably atop the Big Ten.
"It's been a fun run," head coach Dan Hartleb said. "Our guys have been doing such a great job of playing together as a team. It's not one guy who has been carrying us. It is a group of guys who are getting their jobs done day after day. Nobody is being selfish and they get along so well.
"It has been a good group to be around."
By the numbers
- The win makes it the longest active streak in the NCAA
- Illinois has won 12 consecutive conference matchups
- The 13-1 start in the Big Ten has only happened one other time in school history

Injury Report
Virginia loses LHP Nathan Kirby for 6-8 weeks
The Cavaliers got some bad news this week as an MRI revealed a lat strain that will keep starting pitcher Nathan Kirby off the mound for six-to-eight weeks.
In a press release, the school stated that the injury was suffered on April 17 versus Miami. Surgery won't be required.
The junior lefty has picked up where he left off last season, striking out an ACC-high 75 batters in 10 starts, while going 5-2 with a 2.28 ERA in the process.
He was also a unanimous 2015 Preseason All-America selection.
Kirby is coming off a standout season in which he was named an All-American and the 2014 Co-ACC Pitcher of the Year.
