Nationals optimistic Scherzer misses just one start due to thumb injury

Max Scherzer is not expected to be ready for Tuesday's start in Atlanta after suffering a "little sprain" in his right thumb while batting during his previous outing.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams said, following Sunday's 6-2 loss to Miami, that it's unlikely Scherzer will pitch against the Braves, but indicated the injury isn't believed to be serious.

"We probably have to make an adjustment. We don't know who that is yet," Williams said. "We'll get through (Monday's) game and see where we are at. There are options for us. I don't know if Max is going to make this one."

Scherzer was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Sunday but opted to play catch in the outfield instead as his thumb continues to bother him. Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported Monday that Scherzer will consult a specialist about his ailing thumb, though the Nationals remain optimistic he'll miss no more than one start.

"I've dealt with an injury before in college where I had a cut on my middle finger, and I went back out there and pitched in pain," Scherzer said. "And two weeks later, I had biceps tendinitis and really almost kind of messed up my shoulder.

"I really respect the fact that you really have to be 100 percent to go back out there. And in this case, that's how I'm going to treat it."

Scherzer is off to a strong start with the Nationals this season. In four appearances, he owns a 1-2 record and 1.26 ERA to go with 29 strikeouts through 28 2/3 innings.
