3rd opinion on Anthony Rendon's knee confirms MCL sprain; will begin season on DL

Anthony Rendon's injured left knee continues to be a concern as Opening Day approaches.

Rendon's third professional opinion on his knee confirmed the other two: just a sprained MCL. The Washington Nationals star will, however, begin the season on the disabled list, according to manager Matt Williams.

The third baseman, who suffered the injury making a diving play in a game against the Atlanta Braves on March 9, visited Dr. James Andrews on Monday. The renowned orthopedic surgeon was the second doctor to diagnose the knee, but Rendon felt the need to seek out a third opinion from Dr. Steven Singleton in Colorado.

Rendon is considered week-to-week and will rejoin the team to continue rehabbing the injury. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman is reporting Rendon could miss three weeks of action.

Yunel Escobar could move to third base in Rendon's absence to allow Danny Espinosa to draw back into the starting lineup at second base.

Rendon, 24, hit .287 with 21 home runs and 83 RBIs in 153 games for the Nats last season.
