Federowicz is expected to be out well beyond 60 days -- three-to-six months, to be exact -- after undergoing surgery for a meniscus, so Thursday's move was primarily made to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Jandel Gustave, who was claimed off waivers by the Padres.
