Orioles, Pearce avoid arbitration

The Baltimore Orioles avoided arbitration with Steve Pearce by agreeing Friday to a one-year deal for the 2015 campaign worth $3.7 million, the team announced.

Pearce spent most of his career in a reserve role before exploding with the Orioles in 2014, hitting .293/.373/.556 (160 OPS+) with 21 home runs and 26 doubles over 102 games.

The 31-year-old also showed off his durability last season, spending time at first base and in both corner outfield spots. Pearce, an eighth-round pick in 2005, will likely receive starts at each of those positions and designated hitter in 2015 following the departure of Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz.
