1982 - Phillies trade Sandberg to Cubs

The Chicago Cubs acquire future Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg and infielder Larry Bowa from the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop Ivan De Jesus.

Sandberg, drafted in the 20th round of the 1978 draft, appeared in just 13 games for the Phillies in 1981, but arrives in Chicago as its starting second baseman.

He would hit seven homers and steal 32 bases in his rookie year before beginning a remarkable run that included nine straight Gold Gloves, 10 All-Star selections and the 1984 National League MVP.

Sandberg, who was elected to Cooperstown in 2005, finishes with the fourth most homers (282) all-time among second baseman. His career would come full circle in 2013 after being named manager of the Phillies.
