White Sox GM Rick Hahn said Friday that Flowers will enter spring training atop the depth chart at catcher, ESPNChicago.com reports. "Competition is good," Hahn said. "It brings out the best in people. And if someone comes in and fights for that job and earns it, I'm sure we'll be flexible. But certainly we view [Flowers] as the starter."

Analysis:

Veteran backstops Geovany Soto and George Kottaras were both recently brought in on minor league deals with spring training invites, joining Rob Brantly, Adrian Nieto and Kevan Smith in the competition for a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 28-year-old Flowers posted just a .693 OPS last season, but hit .280/.337/.553 with 10 homers after the All-Star break and it sounds like he'd have to really struggle in spring training to lose his starting job.
