Rockies' Rosario working out at different positions

Wilin Rosario has realized he needs to become more versatile if he expects to feature regularly in the Colorado Rockies' lineup this season.

Despite acting as the team's starting catcher the past three seasons, the Rockies inked backstop Nick Hundley to a two-year deal last month and have been reluctant to trade Rosario despite a surplus behind the plate.

With Michael McKenry likely to serve as Hundley's backup, Rosario has been spending his winter at the team's training complex working out at first base and in the outfield.

"He's been great," manager Walt Weiss told Thomas Harding of MLB.com. "He's a great kid, and I didn't expect anything different. He has embraced learning to play the different spots. He realizes he is an offensive weapon."

Though he's never been lauded for his defensive skills behind the plate, Rosario's right-handed power remains an asset. The 25-year-old has hit 63 home runs and owns a .795 OPS over the past three seasons - though these numbers are heavily influenced by playing at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Rosario presents a solid option to platoon at first base with Justin Morneau against left-handed pitching, as he owns a .328/.361/.647 line with 30 home runs in 379 career plate appearances against southpaws.
