It's the second blockbuster trade of the offseason for the Blue Jays, who a month before completed a 12-player deal with the Miami Marlins that netted them All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle.
"I think it comes down to how you evaluate R.A., and I think that's going to define the results of this trade for us," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "We evaluate him as a front-of-the-rotation starter. Clearly, he won the Cy Young, he's pitched like one for the last three years."
Dickey, who posted a league-high five complete games and three shutouts over a career-best 233 2/3 innings in 2011, negotiated a two-year, $25-million extension with the Blue Jays following the trade. The contract includes a $12-million club option for 2016.
The blockbuster move costs Toronto its top prospect - and a consensus top-20 prospect in all of baseball - in catcher Travis d'Arnaud. Right-hander Noah Syndergaard, 19, was the Blue Jays' first-round pick (38th overall) of the 2010 draft.
