The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a one-year, $2-million deal with free-agent slugger Mark Reynolds, the team announced Thursday.

Reynolds provides plenty of pop from the right side of the plate, but making contact on a consistent basis has always been a problem.

The 31-year-old belted 22 home runs in 130 games last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, but struck out 122 times and slashed .196/.287/.394. He has averaged 22 home runs, 145 strikeouts and a .213 average over the past three seasons.

Reynolds, capable of playing either corner infield position, is expected to back up Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter, giving manager Mike Matheny some power against right-handed pitching off the bench.
