Mercedes was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Thursday, Chris Iott of MLive.com reports.
Analysis:
Mercedes was removed from the roster to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Alex Wilson, who was acquired from the Red Sox on Thursday as part of a deal that also involved Yoenis Cespedes and Rick Porcello. Mercedes struggled last season in his first campaign at the Triple-A level, so he will likely repeat the level in 2015, whether that be with the Tigers or another team.
